Formal Education in 2060
What in the world are we preparing for?
And I am back to caveat these are personal, subjective views that do not represent my employer. Please read with a heap of salt
When I was growing up, one of my main life aspirations was to take my family on an airplane-holiday. Oddly specific, but it seemed like a pipe dream that was too expensive to happen. We never had a family holiday until after I turned 18. As I grew up, budget airlines became more ubiquitous. Air travel became less of a luxury.
My siblings and I loved reading encyclopaedias my mum bought for us. It was crazily expensive for our household. Tomes of knowledge was a privilege that the other richer families had in their own homes. But this much convenience of learning all about the world and having it on the shelf. We still went to the library often, but books were a luxury. As I grew up, I read a lot more Wikipedia and blogs like globalissues.org. Knowledge became less of a luxury.
Knowledge has become more democratized and the world is more flattened, relatively. We could read more and go to my places than our parents. I hope in time to come, my (currently non-existent) kids will also go to places beyond my current reach.
